Igor Koshkendey in Concert
Please join us for a solo performance by Igor Koshkendey, world-renowned throat singer and member of Chirgilchin. He has toured the world with Chirgilchin and is widely recognized as a master of multiple Tuvan throat singing styles, but fans know him best for his interpretation of the style invented by Vladimir Oidupaa. His soulful performance features the bayan, a Russian accordion, and traditional Tuvan instruments like the igil and doshpoulour. Koshkendey sings in the Tuvan language, but his songs evoke profound emotions for audiences around the world.
In 1998, Koshkendey took the top prize at the International Competition of Throat Singing in Kyzyl, Tuvas capital. During Chirgilchins second international tour, he won the Grand Prix at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Llangollen, North Wales. He went on to win the International Competition of Throat Singing in Tuva again in 2002. Koshkendey is known for being the only throat singer to master the techniques first invented by legendary throat singer Vladimir Oidupaa. Today, Koshkendey directs the Tuvan Cultural Center for Traditional Arts, and still tours regularly with Chirgilchin. His illustrious musical career shows no sign of slowing down - in 2017 he won a Latin Grammy for Best Urban Song for his collaboration with Puerto Rican rapper Residente.
