Elektra
Elektra is one of Sophocles best known tragedies, lauded for its deep and complex characterization of the titular figure as she experiences grief and contemplates revenge. This play is part of a trilogy, and in the first portion of the tale, King Agamemnon is forced to sacrifice his youngest daughter (Iphigenia) to appease the Goddess Artemis, in order for his ships to have wind to set sail to the Trojan war. Queen Clytemnestra, avenges her young daughters death by killing her husband, Agamemnon as he returns from war. Elektra, daughter of King Agamemnon, mourns her fathers murder, blaming her mother Clytemnestra and her mothers new husband Aegisthus. Elektra, her sister Chrysothemis, and her brother Orestes, who has returned from abroad, band together to seek familial retribution through the murder of their mother and new stepfather, Aegisthus. In the end, the question remains whether shedding blood for blood can ever truly bring peace.
