Refugee Korean fundraiser
** ONLINE TICKET SALES HAVE NOW ENDED BUT WE WILL HAVE ADDITIONAL TICKETS AVAILABLE AT THE DOOR **

This night of Korean food, music, dance and art is a fundraiser to help the Kalmo Refugee Support Group reunite a Somali refugee family. Through a private sponsorship arrangement the Kalmo Refugee Support Group is helping Marwo Abdi, a Somali woman living in Victoria, to bring her mother, brother and two cousins to Canada from a refugee camp in Uganda. The event will also celebrate Korean cuisine and culture and provide an opportunity for people to socialize together, and learn more about refugee issues and local Korean communities.

The event is being organized by Korean community members and allies, and will include a buffet-style Korean dinner (meat, vegan, and gluten-free options), traditional Korean music and dance featuring performers from Korea, and an opportunity to buy handcrafts made by Korean artists and local students from the Sewlutions program. It is open to anyone interested in Korean culture or who wants to contribute to the work of the Kalmo Refugee Support Group. The event is open to all ages and there will be a play area for children.

This event includes two groups of professional traditional performing artists from Korea. Suwon Daechwita is a team of official holders of the Important Intangible Cultural Asset for Daechwita, a traditional ensemble for Royal Palace Ceremonies & Rituals (playing just before the King's appearance). The other group is the Busan Hamjigol Pungmul Troupe who will perform drumming and dancing. You will also enjoy Korea's Traditional Tramp Song and Dance and folk songs performed by individual artists.

Doors will open at 5:00 and dinner will start at 5:45 PM.

<<This event is taking place in Lkwungen territory>>

TICKETS

As this is a fundraiser we ask that people pay full ticket price if they can, and there will also be invitation for additional cash donations at the event. However nobody will be turned away for lack of funds, and we particularly encourage refugee families to come participate in this community-building event and pay whatever you can afford.

If we do not sell out advance tickets, a limited number of tickets will also be available on the night at the door.

ACCESSIBILITY

Please do not wear scented products (perfume, cologne, fragranced hair products, clothes recently washed with fragranced soap or dryer sheets, etc.) to this event. While this is a space used by many groups and we cannot ensure it is a chemical-free space, we can at least make a collective effort to create a fragrance-reduced space so people with respiratory conditions and MCS can more readily participate. More info about chemical injury and ways to improve access:

If you have questions about how to help create fragrance-reduced space please email us at kalmo.victoria@gmail.com
