-----------------
Chamber-folk ensemble NAGANT and avante garde instrumental duo Surgery will perform on Wednesday, July 24th at 8pm on the main stage of the Chopin Theatre, 1543 W. Division Street, Chicago, IL.
"NAGANT" is a chamber-folk ensemble living and working in Chicago. It is the collaborative effort of composers Noah Harris (piano and voice) and Nathan Swanson (violins, viola and cello). Their music draws from a broad base of classical, world, and western folk influence. Swanson's string arrangements have an epic and virtuosic quality, full of nuance and ardor, reminiscent of the late Beethoven Quartets. The songs have a dark swagger that pull the listener into a world of aged imagery, influences like Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits can be heard. Harris' voice is simultaneously theatrical and earnest, one is reminded of singers like Jacques Brel, Jeff Buckley and Rufus Wainwright. On July 24th the two composers will be joined by three members of Chicago's New Millenium Orchestra: violist Rebecca Wilcox, violinist Madeline Capistran, and cellist Dan Klingler.
The music of "Surgery" is a mixed brew of Eastern European accordion melodies with hard hitting percussion on suitcases, a truly unique sound. Both band members come from years of theatrical musical backgrounds ranging from horror film soundtracks to 8-bit video game drum and bass tracks. Now, "Surgery" takes its dark and wildly diverse instrumental song writing to the stage accompanied with metal saws, industrial pipes and Balkan style melodies.
Tickets for the show are $10 and are available at www.brownpapertickets.com
