PRISON DIVESTMENT TRAINING
Prison Divest New Mexico is hosting a community organizing meeting, in follow-up to the screenings of the short film Refuge(e) over the previous two weeks.
Prison Industry Divestment is a necessary tactic to build our power while taking down the for-profit prison industry. Divestment is one critical step we canand shouldall take towards dismantling immigration enforcement and mass incarceration. Jamie Trinkle, a former campaigner with Freedom to Thrive who co-led the successful Portland Prison Divestment city victory will be in town to lead a discussion and training. Learn about the role of the for-profit prison industry in expanding criminalization of immigrants and people of color, what divestment is and how it works, and how divestment opens the door for (re)investment in impacted communities. Jamie will share a case study of the victory in Portland, Oregon and other recent victories across the country, and facilitate a conversation on how we can bring this winning strategy to Santa Fe and New Mexico. Join us to learn more about this issue and take action!
"Prisons do not disappear problems, they disappear human beings. And the practice of disappearing vast numbers of people from poor, immigrant, and racially marginalized communities has literally become big business." - Angela Y. Davis, "Masked Racism" (1998)
Attending one of the screenings will prepare you for this event.
Refuge(e) is a 15 minute film that traces the incredible journey of two refugees, Alpha and Zeferino. They fled state violence to seek asylum in the U.S., only to be incarcerated in a for-profit prison for months without reprieve.
