The People's King: Music from the Himalayas with Noam Lemish
Commissioned in 2009 by the King of Bhutan for his 30th birthday celebration, composer and pianist Noam Lemish presents his multi-movement suite, now arranged for jazz quartet. The People's King is a musical tribute to Bhutan, its dedicated and compassionate King, its beautiful culture, and wonderful people - all of whom touched the composer during residence as a volunteer teacher in Thimphu in 2009-2010.
The piece originally employed four traditional Bhutanese instruments, piano, and chanting monks, and integrates jazz, classical Western music, and traditional Bhutanese folk music. The performance will be accompanied by a multi-media presentation on Bhutan's music and culture.
Noam Lemish is a pianist and composer, splitting his time between the San Francisco Bay Area and Toronto, where he is completing a doctoral degree in music. Lemish released his first album in 2008, "Yes And" - a collaboration with master drummer George Marsh.
