A McKittrick & Hermann Heritage Hoedown
Join Slow Food Katy Trail and other Missouri food enthusiasts as we explore the culinary heritage of McKittrick and Hermann, two towns that grew up across the river from one another in the 1800s.
We'll begin the festivities with lunch at a local, sustainable farm. Then we'll spend the afternoon tasting at wineries and touring the Deutschheim State Historical Site (where we'll be transported to the 19th century through a customized tour of an 1840s Hermann house and a discussion of gardening methods and food customs of the German immigrants). Then it's back to McKittrick Mercantile (The Merck) for tastings from three New Haven producers of wine, beer, vodka, gin and whiskey, and cheese from an Owensville farmstead cheesemaker.
After appetites have been whetted by history and conviviality, Joey Los, chef/owner of The Merck, will treat us to a supper buffet feast of McKittrick and Hermann heritage dishes made from locally grown food. Then we'll head upstairs to top off a delicious day with a rollicking contra dance in the beautifully restored vaudeville theatre.
