A late twentieth and early twenty-first century resurgence has brought on a renewed interest in the music of the klezmer, mostly outside of its original context as an essential component of the Eastern European Jewish wedding. Hankus Netsky will look at how the klezmer actually functioned within the nineteenth and early twentieth century Jewish community using as our reference both classic recordings from klezmer's golden age and contemporary re-creations. |
