Paint The Town Festival presents: COAT BY YOMI SODE
I dont know my grandparents names, how embarrassing is that. But I can name all of Kanyes albums
Picture this: Nigeria. A grandmother passes. London, a son cooks a pot of stew for his mother hoping to uncover hidden stories and unanswered questions.
Home is no stranger, you are an African man and you have responsibilities as the eldest grandchild
COAT is the honest and emotional story of Junior, born in Nigeria he leaves at the age of 9 and heads to London leaving behind a life that he loved and was settled in, written by Yomi Sode.
Yomi Sodes sell-out show tackles immigration, identity and displacement. COAT is a humorous and moving response to the mistakes made by elders that leave the next generation uncertain of what is expected of them.
Yomi is a Nigerian British writer, performer and facilitator. Shortlisted for a Jerwood Compton 2017 Poetry Fellowship, his show Coat has been programmed at the Southbank Centre and Roundhouse to sold-out audiences. His writing has been published in Rialto Magazine, Bare lit and 10: Poets of the New Generation.
Like Kate Tempest and Inua Ellams, the Nigerian-born performer is breaking new ground with Coat, his tale of two cultures, told while he cooks up a stew on stage. The Guardian
COAT belongs to a growing body of work that is reasserting the dramatic power of the written wordSode is animated by a gentleness, a sweetly self-deprecating humour that itself offers a radical challenge to conventional ideas of masculinity. Claire Armistead, The Guardian
Yomi Sode [is] among the poets whose work [brings] tears to my eyes. Christina Patterson, The Guardian
