Myths & Masks Workshop with Will Clipman
Myths & Masks with Will Clipman

A creative self-realization & personal transformation workshop, with Limited Enrollment

10 AM-2 PM, Saturday March 30th at Willits Community Theater

Conducted by GRAMMY-nominated musician, award-winning poet, acclaimed maskmaker and storyteller Will Clipman, the Myths & Masks® workshop is a creative hands-on experience of self-realization and personal transformation, combining maskmaking and mythopoetic storytelling in an empowering and enjoyable atmosphere of shared exploration and inspiration.

Our mythopoetic journey unfolds in three stages. . .

Stage 1: The Lifecast

Working with a partner of choice and following detailed step-by-step instructions from Will, participants take turns sculpting a plaster bandage Lifecast® on each others faces, a process that takes approximately forty-five minutes per mask and feels like a facial massage combined with a gentle exfoliation. While their Lifecasts are sculpted, models are invited to creatively visualize or meditate on an Inner Mythic Persona®: a highest self or Super You whom their masks will be painted and embellished to represent.

Stage 2: The Mythic Persona Poem

While our Lifecasts set, Will lays out a ten-step template for the Mythic Persona Poem®, which tells the life story of the individual Inner Mythic Persona. Once a rough draft is sketched out, participants are encouraged but not required to personalize the basic poem pattern in any way they wish, and Will introduces elements of poetic composition that enable everyone regardless of prior experience to revise the rough draft into a complete, finished poem.

Stage 3: Painting the Mask

Now that our Lifecasts have set and our Mythic Persona Poems have been written (and shared aloud for mutual enjoyment and inspiration--or not--as each individual artist wishes!) we turn our attention to painting our masks according to the imagery generated in our original meditations/creative visualizations and described in the language our poems. Experimenting freely with color, line, texture, symbolism, abstraction and representationand with the proviso that there are no mistakes, only new creative opportunitieswe translate ideas, emotions and images expressed in our poems into visual art.

. . . and our mythopoetic journey continues!

We close the workshop with a brief discussion of the Artistic Treasure Hunt®:  an informal and on-going collection of found objects (both natural and human-made) that can be used to sculpturally embellish our masks; this is the ultimate expression of the Mythic Persona, in which the mask comes fully to life and achieves personal transformation and self-realization. Participants take away wearable original mask art and an epic saga with which to continue their individual mythopoetic journeys.
