Agnes of God is set at a convent, after a novice nun named Agnes unexpectedly gives birth and the baby is found murdered in her room. Agnes has no recollection of the conception, pregnancy or birth and the court appoints a psychiatrist, Dr. Martha Livingstone to assess Agnes's sanity. Mother Superior Miriam Ruth stands in the way and is highly protective of Agnes as she believes Agnes exists on a different spiritual plane from others, shrouded in an innocence that she views as miraculous.
What follows is a clash of wills over the fate of this young woman who has demons of her own as the Dr. seeks to uncover the logical explanation to the crime and to help Agnes confront realities not rooted in religious doctrine while Mother Superior adamantly blocks what she sees as the inevitable dissection of Agnes's psyche that will diminish and destroy her fragile spirit. Dr. Livingstone's questions force all three women to re-examine the meaning of faith and the power of love, leading to a dramatic, compelling climax.
This story is based on an actual event that occurred in a convent just outside Rochester, New York in the 1970s in which a thirty-six-year-old Montessori teacher, was found bleeding in her room by the other sisters after she did not come down for meals. The Sister had given birth and couldn't remember being pregnant. The baby was found dead in her small convent room, asphyxiated. At her trial, Sister Maureen waived her right to a jury, the trial was over in ten days, and Sister Maureen was found not guilty of all charges by reason of insanity.
Agnes of God explores themes of religion and science, maternal instinct, innocence and guilt and how far people will go to preserve their beliefs, Agnes of God was critically acclaimed and was nominated for two Tony awards.
