Jewish Holocaust Survivor Primo Levi was born in Turin, Italy, in 1919 and was trained as a chemist. Arrested as a member of the anti-Fascist resistance, he was deported to Auschwitz in 1944. He is one of the most eloquent witnesses of the incalculable inhumanity and violence of the twentieth century.
His experiences in the death camps are the subject of several books, novels, collections of short stories and poems. His best known works include If This is a Man (1947, published as Survival in Auschwitz in the United States).
The Truce, composed by Primo Levi between 1961 and 1962, is the sequel of If This is a Man and describes the long way home of the protagonist after the liberation of Auschwitz in January 1945. Through a careful selection of passages from the novel, Riccardo Bocci will provide the audience with a new reading of this rich text in which Levi renders a gallery of characters highly representative of different kinds of humanity.
Riccardo Bocci was trained on the most prestigious stages in Italy and has worked with renowned directors such as Luca Ronconi, Gabriele Lavia and many others. He has played both classical and contemporary roles, from Shakespeare to Alan Bennett. Riccardo has also participated in various television shows on Italian public television and radio dramas. He is currently giving voice to world renowned novelists such as Joyce Carol Oates, Carlos Ruiz Zafon and Alessandro Baricco.
*Before the program, guests are invited to participate in the reading of names from the list of 8,000 Italian Jews deported during the Holocaust.
