Mills College Dexter Gordon Event
An enchanting evening to celebrate Black History Month and a fundraiser for Mills College will be held on February 27, 2019 at Mills College's newly renovated performance theatre, Lisser Hall. The Alumnae Association of Mills College and the International Women's Forum (IWF) NorCal present, An Evening with Maxine Gordon, author of a recently released biography of her husband, acclaimed tenor saxophonist, Dexter Gordon. This celebrated book "Sophisticated Giant: The Life and Legacy of Dexter Gordon will be discussed with the author by a stellar panel of jazz enthusiast, Marcus Shelby, Ricki Stevenson and Belva Davis who will interview Mrs. Gordon about Dexters life of survival and redemption. During the discussions, attendees will get to view film clips from Dexter's movie Round Midnight, savor a live musical performance of his work and be one of few to view a short film by Arthur Elgort of Dexter's last public performance.
A VIP reception featuring a meet and greet with the author will take place at the President of Mills College home on campus from 5:30 to 6:30. Tickets to the VIP Reception are $96.00 and include an autographed copy of the book, private reception and reserved seating at the event.
$30 General Admission for the event is scheduled for 6:30 at Lisser Hall and will include a ticket for a beverage.
Student admission is $10.00 to the event commencing at 7:00.
The event will be an evening to remember and is expected to sell out so get your tickets early.
