Front to Back - Classic Yiddish Albums!
A concert of contemporary takes on two of the classic Yiddish albums of the mid-20th century!
First renowned clarinetist/composer Michael Winograd will lead an all-star band performing the legendary Tanz! album from 1955. Considered a high point of mid-century klezmer creativity, the original Tanz! album features two of the leading forces of American klezmer, clarinetists Dave Tarras (considered the father of American klezmer) and Sammy Musiker (Tarrass son-in-law and a versatile musician who played with Gene Krupa).
In the second half of the concert, Grammy-winning trumpeter Frank London of The Klezmatics and percussionist Deep Singh tackle Irving Fieldss 1959 LP Bagels & Bongos. Where Fields fused Latin and Yiddish music in interpreting well-known hits like Bei mir bist du shayn, London and Singh will add a host of additional influences from Downtown Jazz to Punjabi bhangra!
