Spring Awakening
Provocative, moving, and award-winning, Spring Awakening tells a timeless story about love, lust, and coming of age, set to music by alternative rock artist Duncan Sheik. Based on the controversial 19th century play by German playwright Frank Wedekind, Steven Saters adaptation examines the struggles of teenagers discovering the of their own tumultuous sexuality and coping with coming of age in a repressed and rigid society. Although the play is set in the past, the characters face conflicts relevant to todays teenagers: academic pressure, abuse, love, loss, sexuality questioning, friendship struggles, and emotional distress.
The rock score -- performed expertly by our student band -- is upbeat and modern in sound, providing an interesting juxtaposition with the Victorian-era costumes and dialogue. The lyrics capture the language and parlance of contemporary adolescence, with songs such as: My Junk is You, and Totally F*****. While the show definitely pushes some boundaries in the name of art, the depth of the characters, the heartfelt friendships portrayed in the plotline, and the Tony Award winning score make this piece powerful and easy to relate to, especially for young performers and audiences.
***Please be advised that this play includes mature themes, language, and content, and it may not be appropriate for all viewers.***
