Jeremy Lawrence stars in the West Coast premier of 'Lavender Songs', winner of New York's 2008 Bistro Award, with recent sell out runs at Pangea in New York City.  Directed by Jason Jacobs, with piano accompaniment by Ariela Bohrod, the show introduces us to "Tante Fritzi", Lawrences alter-ego in this recreation of a 1930's Berlin nightclub.

Lavender Songs' history began right here in LA in 1990 when Lawrence was literary manager at the Mark Taper Forum and creator of 'Cabaret Verboten', which starred Bebe Neuwirth and the late Roger Rees.  The show later performed in New York, around the country, and Europe.

From his work on 'Cabaret Verboten', Jeremy went on to create English versions of over 70 Weimar period songs from literal translations by German scholars, Kathleen Komar and Alan Lareau.  Lawrence sang some of these Lavender Songs at an event fashioned by Lareau for the exhibit: Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals (1933-1945) at the United States Holocaust Museum.  Lawrence's English versions are now sung and recorded by cabaret artists all over the world.  Listen as Ute Lemper sings Jeremy's translation of the early gay liberation anthem, "Das Lila Lied": Lavender Song.

We're thrilled to welcome Jeremy back to LA to lead us through an amazingly creative period in Berlin that lasted until Hitlers rise to power in 1933.

Following the performance, renowned playwright Josh Gershick will lead a Q&A with Jeremy.

(You can hear WNYC Public Radio interview Jeremy Lawrence about Lavender Songs on WNYC's the Takeaway)
