Kwame Anthony Appiah is a Professor of Philosophy and Law at New York University and a renowned author of seminal works on cosmopolitanism, identity, and global ethics, including In My Father's House, The Honor Code, and the prize-winning Cosmopolitanism.

This event will feature a discussion of Dr. Appiah's lessons from writing The Ethicist column in The New York Times along with central ideas from his recent book, The Lies that Bind: Rethinking Identity. Appiah will challenge common assumptions about identity and argue that many of the social and political issues that we face in society today arise from misunderstandings about how we frame issues concerning race, class, gender, and religion. Appiah examines how identities are created through conflict and contends that the practice of classifying ourselves in terms of social identities falsifies our sense of who we are. If we are to make societal progress and to live good lives, we must begin by first getting clearer about how we frame the issues that seem to depend on social identities.

Atul Gewande, author of Being Moral, says of Dr. Appiah's latest book, When it comes to the human values that allow us to live with one another, Appiah may be our most penetratingand entertainingmajor philosopher.

This event provides an opportunity to listen as Appiah - in the words of Zadie Smith (author of Swing Time and Changing My Mind) - "elegantly dismantles the humbug, dogmas, pseudoscience, and propaganda that have long dogged our attempts to discuss identity, and offers in their place a practical and philosophical toolkit, as subtly radical in its aims as it is humane in its application...  An inspiring and essential read."
