Beyond Banning the Box with Dr. Paula Ioanide
Although they are some of the most committed and reliable employees, formerly incarcerated people face significant barriers to securing employment and therefore to successful reintegration into communities. This workshop introduces employers and employees to fair and inclusive practices for applicants who have past criminal records.

Attendees will learn about the unique challenges formerly incarcerated applicants confront during the application process, interview process, and background checks.

Attendees will explore best practices employers and employees can adopt to make their workplace more inclusive and equitable.

About the Presenter:
Dr. Paula Ioanide is an associate professor at the Center for the Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity at Ithaca College. Her teaching and research focus on the negative effects of present-day racial and gender injustices, particularly mass incarceration.  She has conducted numerous workshops on increasing racial and gender equity in higher education and employment settings. Paula believes in creating social justice cultures and movements that foster healing, interdependence, dignity and freedom.

Her book, The Emotional Politics of Racism: How Feelings Trump Facts in an Era of Colorblindness, is available through Stanford University Press.  She is co-editor of a new collection titled, Antiracism Inc.: Why the Way We Talk About Racial Justice Matters from Punctum Books.
