A new guided meditation for traumatic and disturbing memories: Blink-Flash
Serving and bearing witness to those suffering physically, emotionally and spiritually, healthcare personnel can be left with vicarious and secondary trauma from distressing memories.  This has been described as "Critical Incident Stress Syndrome." We will address these issues with some exciting new developments in the field of trauma therapy, modified into an easy, rapid visualization exercise:  Blink-Flash Meditation®.

Since 2017, nearly 5,000 EMDR-trained psychotherapists from over 30 countries have attended a six hour workshop or webinar to learn of a recent advance in trauma treatment: the Flash Technique®, developed since mid-2016 by senior EMDR trainer Phil Manfield, Ph.D. with Lewis Engel, Ph.D.

In contrast to other psychological treatments (such as EMDR, Prolonged Exposure Therapy; Critical Incident Stress Debriefing; Trauma Focused-CBT; Somatic Experiencing®, Emotional Freedom Technique®, etc.) the Flash Technique® and Blink-Flash Meditation® INVOLVE NO CONSCIOUS EXPOSURE to traumatic or disturbing memories. This paradigm shift reduces the risk of re-traumatization to nearly zero.

Blink-Flash Meditation® has been developed as a self-administered visualization technique to help psychotherapists and other health care personnel when they have disturbing memories, particularly ones after exposure to significant medical, emotional and spiritual suffering in patients and their loved ones. A short and simple visualization, Blink-Flash Meditation® can rapidly reduce both the impact of disturbing memories in people we work with and in our own vicarious trauma,  promoting resilience.

This approach has been demonstrated to psychologists, social workers, physicians and nurses in oncology, palliative care, hospice and emergency room staff at UCSF and Kaiser San Rafael.  We have also held meetings demonstrating the Flash Technique® for researchers and clinicians from the VAMCSF, UCSF, ZSFGH Trauma Center, and to senior teachers from the SF Zen Center.

In this two-hour format, we will describe clinical case examples with audio and video recordings, and discuss theoretical issues in consciousness and relevant research from memory reconsolidation and subliminal perception.

Most importantly, participants will have an opportunity to DIRECTLY EXPERIENCE Blink-Flash Meditation® and subjectively feel changes in their own disturbing memories (of any kind.  Content of such memories will not need to be discussed by participants).

("Money-back guarantee" for any participant who does not find this seminar engaging, powerfully useful in their clinical practice and personal life, and intriguing for what it can demonstrate about consciousness and memory.)
