It is all about the immediacy.
Why are you still reading this? Reading something is a filter that takes you out of the physical moment. Like your phone. Don't forget to bring your phone. Phones are your immediate access to the world. You probably saw this on your phone. What else would you be missing out on if you didn't have your phone?
Filters spoil immediacy. We intend on having lots of filters. What filters can you think of that disassociate you? Bring those. Build your camps around them. Create art that encompasses the reality of our filtered society. Filtered water, filtered lenses, filtered dialogue. Let's look through the looking gauze.
Carpe diem. Carpe DAMN. Carpe DAYum! We will have a better today tomorrow, where we wish we were at Burning Man.
This year we are spoofing the principle of Immediacy. Lets take an elaborate look at the intent behind that concept through an examination of its etymology. Most people think immediacy translates to right now. Although they are close, it is not an accurate portrayal and leads them to only understand a portion of its meaning. First, we must break the word down into its parts.
Media is a Latin root meaning middle. We hear this in words like mediator - one who operates from the middle of a dispute, median - a break in the middle of two roads, or medium - a quality in the middle of two. Around the late 19th century we began to think of media as a layer and also ascribe it to forms of mass communication (radio, television, film, computers, etc). We can only suppose this was because it adds a layer in the middle of us and reality. The prefix im upends the concept completely. It means, simply, not or without. We see it in words like impossible, impatient, or immortal. This brings the concept of immediacy to be understood as without a middle, no layers, and unfiltered, which leads us to the idea of things happening to us right now but not wholly arriving at the totality of the word.
For this event we are not removing the filters, layers, or middle ground of experience. We are adding to them. We are inundating ourselves in Mediacy. We will perform en media res. We will have a phone on us at all times. We will have wifi access and laptops and televisions. We will filter all of our experiences through a variety of sensory lenses. We will have places for fabricated emotions. We will wear our sunglasses at night. We will step through the looking glass. The effigy will be projected larger than life and live streamed on an app so the people at BRC can also witness our miracles. We will gaze at the shadows on the wall of our cave and suspend disbelief that they are not real. We will practice Mediacy and we will be better for it.
