The Green Bird presented by Westridge Theatre
When King Tartaglia goes off to war, Queen Ninetta gives birth to twins (Princess Barbarina and Prince Renzo). The evil Smeraldina disguises herself as King Tartaglias mother, banishes Queen Ninetta and orders the deaths of the Prince and Princess. Pantalone, the king and queens advisor, cannot bring herself to kill the Prince and Princess and instead secretly sends the twins far away from their kingdom. Although the Prince and Princess are raised in poverty, they somehow know they are destined for greatness and embark on a journey to find their real home. On the way, they discover the true meaning of family.
Presented in the style of Commedia dellarte, the show uses stock characters, physical comedy and improvisation.
The 8th grade production is a wild, chaotic road to happily ever after, paved with curses, clowns, demons, enchanted fruit, selfies and a talking statue who keeps losing control of the story shes narrating.
Carlo Gozzi wrote the original story and Hillary DePiano adapted it for the modern audience, updating the script to reflect aspects of society today.
Seating is general admission. Recommended for ages 8 and up.
