Immersive Education Series: Diving in- A sneak peak into the workshop process with The Speakeasy Society
The process of creating an immersive performance is almost impossible to explain- its something that needs to be experienced.  In Diving in, Artistic Directors Genevieve Gearhart and Julianne Just will guide you through a hands on experience of the generative process used by The Speakeasy Society.

In many of their projects, The Speakeasy Society works collaboratively with performers to generate a combination of physical and narrative moments in order to more deeply understand a text.  Ultimately, some of these elements evolve into portions of their productions.

Participants will be asked to familiarize themselves with a chosen source text in advance of the workshop, which will be used to generate material in a variety of individual and group exercises.

This workshop will focus on generating quickly and fearlessly, while giving you a taste of how The Speakeasy Society creates and collaborates with performers.

Enrollment is limited. Bring clothes you feel comfortable moving in, as well a paper and pencil.

Who we are:

The Speakeasy Society is an LA based immersive entertainment company creating intimate and epic experiences in unexpected places.

We create 360-degree worlds providing escape through total engagement - crafting a shared experience where audience interaction becomes a vital aspect of the performance.

The Speakeasy Society, named Best Emerging Immersive Theater Company of 2015 by the LAWeekly, was officially formed in a womens restroom at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in 2012. Longtime collaborators JulianneJust and Genevieve Gearhart, along with newcomer Matthew Bamberg-Johnson, created The Weird Sisters, a witch-centric adaptation of Macbeth that gave audience members a very up close and personal experience of the classic narrative. As the experiences have grown so has the company, Associate Artistic Director Chris Porter joined the team in 2015 followed by Producing Director John Henningsen, and their newest member, Michael Bates.

Recent productions include Wild Party, a roaring 20s extravaganza commissioned by The Broad Stage in Santa Monica for their 10th anniversary season, and The Kansas Collection, an ongoing episodic ARX where guests must choose a side in the war for Oz.

While the company and their list of collaborating artists has grown, the goal remains unaltered: they work to change what it means to go to the theater in Los Angeles, one performance at a time.
