Mazahua Embroidery Workshop
Learn the miniature embroidery technique of the indigenous Mazahua of Mexico. Mother & daughter, Enriqueta Calixtro & Dulce Cenobio, are the 2018 World Village Fest Artists in Residence.
The embroidery technique that Enriqueta & Dulce use is done with two needles, as they simultaneously work with two different tones of thread, generally black and red or black and blue, which is the typical Mazahua style. Most of the designs come from the patterns that the family has been designing over generations. Although, they can reproduce images from any medium.
On several occasions, Enriqueta has obtained the Gran Premio de Arte Popular, one of the main awards granted in Mexico.
