========================================
In honor of the late Vidushi Purnima Chaudhuri (who passed away a few weeks ago), we are pleased to present Indrani Mukherjee for a rare concert of Khayal, Thumri, Dadra, Bhajan, and other lovely Indian classical and light-classical musical forms.
A rising star in the firmament of Indian classical music, Indrani Mukherjee's artistic temperament and aesthetic sensibilities have left a pleasing impression on the minds of audiences and critics both in India and abroad.
Indrani hails from a family of musicians. At the age of 3, she started learning under guidance of her mother Shikha Chatterje and her aunt Rita Roy; around 5 years of age Indrani started learning under her maternal grandfather Shri Sanjib Banerjee, a well known vocalist of the Kirana Gharana. In 1996, Indrani was accepted into the prestigious ITC Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata, and came under the guidance of Pandit Arun Bhaduri. Indrani learned Thumris and Bhajans from the late Bidushi Purnima Choudhury, the noted exponent of Thumri from Benaras Gharana. Indrani also studied with Bidushi Manju Sundaramji of Varanasi and with the late Pandit Ramashray Jha of Allahabad. Indrani is a regular performer on All India Radio.
Indrani acquired degree of "Sangeet Prabhakar" from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad, and "Upadhyay" from Trailokya Sangeet Parisad, Kolkata.

A note regarding the Thumri musical form: Both Indrani Mukherjee and her late teacher, Purnima Chaudhuri, are noted exponents of the Benares style of Thumri singing -- the particular Indian musical form and tradition likewise identified with the late Begum Akhtar (who entertained Meher Baba with Thumris and Ghazals in a special recital at "Guruprasad," his summer residence in Pune in the 1960s).
Avatar Meher Baba relished this sensitive, romantic style of singing, and Meherabode is delighted to present a noted exponent of the ornate music of Thumri (and other distinctive musical forms) in a rare afternoon concert for the enjoyment of music-lovers in the greater LA area.
