ARTEMISIA PRESENTS: Mothers (Hyde Park)
Step into the timeless, international and universal world of motherhood.

Steeped in joy, fear, humor, anger, determination and transcendent love, the stories and voices of mothers too often go unheard. In their third fully staged and immersive show, vocal trio Artemisia paints a portrait of motherhood through the songs of women from all over the world.

Hear a breathless Appalachian exaltation at the birth of a young daughter, a playful First Nations lullaby about a jumping prairie dog, a mournful Lithuanian graveside song from an orphaned daughter, an admonishing Yiddish dialogue from an exasperated mother to a love-stuck teenage daughter, and a world premiere commission from Chicagos own acclaimed female composer, Kate Pukinskis.

This concert is joined by special guest artists Canta Bella of Columbia Youth Choirs, directed by Emily Edgington Andrews.

ABOUT ARTEMISIA:

Chicago-based vocal trio Artemisia (Kaitlin Foley, Diana Lawrence, Alexandra Olsavsky) harnesses the power of the female voice to explore complex social issues through the vocal traditions of the world. Praised for sincerity, wit, and mind-blowing technique (Vocal Arts Chicago), Artemisia brings diversity and accessibility to their programming. Not your typical stand-and-sing ensemble, Artemisia draws from a vast repertoire of vocal styes - from Appalachian folk, Tushetian highlander cries, Cuban dance music, and everything in-between - to take audiences on a journey of sound and spirit with every performance.

Artemisia actively commissions and performs newly composed works by living female composers. Most recently, they performed a liturgical premiere of Sungji Hong's Missa Lumen de Lumine, and a world premiere of O Nata Lux, which Hong wrote specifically for the group. Their upcoming original show, Mothers, will feature a new commission from Chicago's own Kate Pukinskis. In addition to new commissions, all three members of Artemisia regularly compose for the group internally, frequently adding new arrangements and original compositions of their own to their programs.

In addition to performing, Artemisia routinely works with community and youth ensembles to advocate for a culturally literate and socially aware approach to singing. They routinely collaborate with the Hyde Park division of the Chicago Children's Choir directed by Mollie Stone, and with multiple chapters of the Columbia Youth Choirs directed by Emily Edgington Andrews.
