KSA Baumer Lecture Series Featuring Barbara Bestor, FAIA
An award-winning architect, Barbara Bestor, FAIA, is particularly known for her commercial spaces, such as Intelligentsia Coffee in Silverlake, California, and her experimental houses located in Venice, Santa Barbara, and New York City. She believes that good design creates an engaged urban life and embraces the strange beauty that enhances everyday life experience. Bestor has served on the faculty at UCLA, Harvard University and the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc). She is the author of Bohemian Modern: Living in Silver Lake (Harper Collins, 2006) and holds a MArch degree from SCI-Arc and a bachelors in Visual and Environmental Studies from Harvard University. Bestor has designed private residences in Echo Park, Pacific Palisades, Mount Washington, Silverlake, Los Feliz, Topanga Canyon, and Santa Barbara, and stores and restaurants in Los Angeles, New York City, and Tokyo. In 2011, she was the recipient of the LA Restaurant Design Award from the American Institute of Architects for her design of the Pitfire Pizza in LA. She was also nominated for the James Beard Foundation Award for the same restaurant that year. The Floating Bungalow house in Venice, CA was featured in MOCAs 2013 survey of contemporary Los Angeles architecture. In 2015, the Beats By Dre Headquarters was recognized with a National AIA Honor Award for Interior Architecture. In 2017, two new projects opened: the Ashes + Diamonds Winery and Event Center and the Silverlake Conservatory of Music
