We are very privileged to welcome Helen Shallow to the PPC to present her work on this controversial topic.
Helen completed her midwifery studies in Edinburgh in 1987, and she proudly claims some Scottish heritage. She has worked in all areas of midwifery in several maternity units in both England and Scotland. She experienced two exceptional years practising midwifery in Botswana between 1993-1995. From 2000 to 2012 Helen took an active role in scoping and developing birth centres, believing this to be the way forward for a social model of midwifery care. From 2005-2014 she held posts as head of midwifery and consultant midwife in a District General Hospital in Northern England. Helen completed her PhD in July 2016 and has been fully occupied ever since, both working, writing and presenting her PhD findings.
Helen writes, "I am looking forward to presenting my work on what happens to women in labour when they decide it is time to go to hospital. My PhD examined the interactions between mothers and midwives when labour begins. Often mothers were sent home and for some this led to traumatic birth experiences and dilemmas for midwives".
