Gary Krist Author Event
This event is ticketed and includes a copy of Gary Krist's new book "The Mirage Factory".
Gary Krist is the New York Times bestselling author of several works of fiction and non-fiction, including "City of Scoundrels" and "Empire of Sin". He has been lauded by the New York Times, Washington Post, NPR, and a slew of other outlets for his narrative histories focusing on a particular metropolis on the verge of modernization. He focused on Chicago in "City of Scoundrels" and New Orleans in "Empire of Sin" and now turns to L.A., examining the moments of the early 20th century that would turn the city into the modern metropolis that we know today. He does this through the lens of three individuals who would prove to be pivotal in shaping L.A. into L.A.William Mulholland who designed the massive aqueduct that would make urban life possible in this water-starved corner of the country; D.W. Griffith who would give Los Angeles the industry it needed to grow; and Aimee Semple McPherson, evangelist, faith healer, and radio preacher, who would provide the city with its identity as a worldwide center for spiritual realization and reinvention.
