I am happy to announce that Dr. Susan Collins, PhD, will provide another full day of Harm Reduction Training to Valley Cities Staff. Harm reduction is strength based, founded in motivational interviewing and is a good treatment strategy for individuals who use substances in a risky manner, including the administration strategy, use environment, frequency and quantity used.  Harm Reduction is a great approach for our clinical staff to use with all clients who use substances, especially those who are not interested in or have not identified abstinence as a treatment goal.  This approach is very helpful for when you feel stuck with a client who has challenged you or your mission as a treatment provider.

Dr. Collins is a licensed clinical psychologist, Associate Professor at the University of Washington  Harborview Medical Center, and co-director of the Harm Reduction Research and Treatment (HaRRT) Lab. Dr. Collins has been involved in substance use research for two decades. She works with a multidisciplinary research and clinical team, community-based agencies, traditional Native healers, and substance-using community members to co-develop and evaluate interventions that aim to reduce substance-related harm and improve quality of life for affected individuals and their communities.

Susan has developed a harm reduction approach for use during individual sessions. The training will provide an introduction to harm reduction, the rationale for harm reduction and time for some practice.
