SBIRT Training
Valley Cities now screens all adult clients with the AUDIT, DAST, GAD-7 and PHQ-9 at intake. The SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment) helps clinical staff discuss the screening results with clients through a brief intervention and refer to treatment (brief, or long term) if needed. SBIRT is also used in SUD assessments to talk with clients about seeking mental health care when their PHQ-9 and GAD-7 scores indicate a need. SBIRT is evidence based practice and is based on motivational interviewing (MI). It is a specific use of Motivational Interviewing, supplemented with additional factual information about drug and alcohol use.
In 2017, Valley Cities trained 70 Care Coordinators and Intake Staff. We have recently trained 9 staff to become SBIRT trainers and will provide the training quarterly.
Objectives for the training are: Help you develop your knowledge, skills, and abilities in order to use SBIRT effectively. Learn how to discuss potential substance use health impacts and risks to engage clients in healthier behaviors before a substance use disorder develops. Learn about the screening tools GAD-7, PHQ-9, AUDIT and DAST and how they can be used in your practice Learn a four step model for delivering a brief intervention.
