Study from New York-based master guitarist, Chico Pinheiro. Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Chico is a leader in the new generation of Brazilian musicians finding fame in America and around the world. After turning professional at age 15, he moved to Boston where he received his music degree (Summa cum laude) from Berklee. He has recorded with major Brazilian and American jazz and popular artists, and received the Top 10 Album of the Year in 2003 and 2005, as well as DownBeat's RISING STAR/Guitar Annual Critics Poll award.
Besides his main projects as leader, he has collaborated with the cream of the crop of Brazilian artists such as Joyce, Ivan Lins, Rosa Passos, Dori Caymmi, Danilo Caymmi, João Donato, Johnny Alf, Chico César, Ed Motta, César Camargo Mariano, Elza Soares, while also making his mark internationally, recording and playing with Placido Domingo, Brad Mehldau, Esperanza Spalding, Dianne Reeves, Nnenna Freelon, Bob Mintzer, Roberto Fonseca, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, The Bob Mintzer Big Band, The Paris Jazz Big Band, The Swiss Jazz Orchestra, The Danish Radio Big Band, The Seasons Guitar Quartet (w/ Anthony Wilson, Julian Lage & Steve Cardenas), Ari Hoenig, Gary Novak, Sammy Figueroa, Cachaíto Lopez (Buena Vista Social Club), Mark Turner, Chris Potter, Tom Scott, Eddie Gomez, Claudio Roditi, Duduka da Fonseca, Giovani Hidalgo, amongst others.

MASTERCLASS FOCUS: -Participants of all levels of musicianship and all instruments welcome.
-An introduction to Brazilian Rhythms through selected repertoire, and a short explanation of the genres and styles.
-Demonstration of the specific role played by each instrument in each different style, and how the guitar can interact in a creative and constructive way in a band/combo, or solo.
-Similarities and differences between Jazz comping and Brazilian music comping regarding time, feel, voicings, voice-leading, etc...
-Improvisation concepts and harmonic considerations: Differences and similarities between Brazilian music harmonies and Jazz II-Vs harmonies. Fluency, rhythmic, harmonic and melodic aspects in each different sub-genre.
-Techniques for the use of polyrhythms/odd meters applied to different genres: Samba, swing (jazz), baião, afoxé, maracatu, etc...
-Compositional aspects: Similarities and differences between the MPB (Brazilian Popular Music), contemporary Jazz and Jazz Standards: Tonal/Modal Harmony X Harmonyfor-themelody, more advanced concepts, Super Lydian, polytonality, etc...
