Have you ever wondered what's out there beyond the Earth? Do you want to look through a professional-level telescope and really understand what you see? The Robert Ferguson Observatory's Introduction to Astronomy will give you the basic knowledge you need to begin your journey into understanding our incredible universe. This four-part series introduces you to the fundamentals of astronomy, recent discoveries about our solar system, the evolution of stars, and the origin and future of our Universe. Each class lasts about an hour and is geared towards the layperson. After class, you can peer into the depths of space using the observatory's three large telescopes, guaranteed to be a unique and enriching experience.
We invite you to join RFO and its volunteers as we embark on this new series.
Introduction to Astronomy: Part 4, From the Big Bang to the Accelerating Universe
What was the Big Bang and when did it happen? What are dark matter and dark energy? Is there an edge to the Universe? What's a galaxy, and how many galaxies are out there? This session will go far beyond our Milky Way galaxy to introduce you to the field of Cosmology, the study of the universe as a whole. You'll learn about the Big Bang, and we'll discuss how the Universe has evolved from its beginning to its current accelerating and expanding state. We'll study one of the Hubble Space Telescopes most important photos: the Hubble Deep Field, looking back in time to see how galaxies have evolved. We'll look at the effects of dark matter and dark energy. Finally, we'll conclude this final class with a look at one of the most recent and significant discoveries: gravitational waves.
The presentation starts promptly at the time shown. Please consider your travel time before purchasing tickets.
Tickets are limited to 30 guests: $20.00 per adult and $15.00 for seniors (62+) and youth under 18.
The observatory is a 501(3)(c) institution, and all proceeds from this event go towards maintaining its many public education programs.
