Tales of the Mother tongue
Deeply rooted in both past and present, the spiritual idea of 'the other' dominates many cultural teachings in Morocco as its history and creation is riddled with these understandings. Due to Moroccos past colonisation by its European invaders, a lot of stories and tales of the old Morocco were unwritten. French army's forced through their language, trying to forget what was once there. Writing and speaking in Berber's traditional languages, at the time, were forbidden. But what the French could not help was the storytelling that would happen from generation to generation... a history recited through memory. A history mainly told through the words of women.
This is where 'Tales of the Mother tongue' comes to life. A new LPP (Live Projection Painting) by the artist created specifically for the Marrakech Biennale 2016 focusing on forgotten Heroins of Moroccos past, mainly that of 'Kahena', a mythologically strong woman helping to blur the lines between gender politics, identity, black magic and religious understandings. A legendary fallen heroine & warrior of Berber past, this project helps hidden stories of the women's fight to help keep Berber customs alive come to light, often a history suppressed through colonisation.
