Set in 1967, this affectionate comedy tells the story of a bittersweet friendship that emerges between two strangers at two dramatically different places in their lives. Cantankerous Judge Francis Biddle is 81 and in failing health, and fresh-faced Sarah Schorr, the latest in a string of secretaries, is hired to help with his memoirs. He's well born, highly educated, widely traveled, and wealthy, while she's a shy, unsophisticated young woman raised humbly in rural Canada. This richly scripted story is inspired by the playwright's own experiences as the personal secretary to the real Judge Biddle, Attorney General under FDR and Chief Judge of the Nuremberg Trials.
