EVENT OVERVIEW:
Dan Hinkley and Dave Demers have collaborated in plant exploration for two decades, traveling and trekking together the mountainous terrains in remote areas of China, North India, Bhutan and Chile. Collectively, the duo have introduced to cultivation a titillating inventory of hardy plants seldom encountered but profoundly worthy of cultivation. During this entertaining evening, Hinkley will take on the adventures and plants he has encountered in Vietnam while Demers will extract moments from from his natural wanderings and showcase how these observations have impacted his design work.
The proceeds of this benefit lecture and auction will, in its entirety, support an international symposium on the taxonomy of the Woodland Lilies; Disporum, Disporopsis, Maianthemum, Polygonatum (et al) to be held July 6th-8th, 2018 in Kingston, WA as well as an expedition by members of the American Plant Exploration Fund to the Arunachal Pradesh in NE India in October, 2018.

LUNCH & TOUR, WINDCLIFF, INDIANOLA: Be swept away by the blue of Agapanthus and the Puget Sound in late July or August at the home of Dan Hinkley and Robert Jones in Indianola, WA. A gourmet farm-to-table meal with superb pairings of NW wine will be provided after a detailed tour of the garden. A seriously good Agapanthus will be provided for each guest for their garden. (Mutally agreed-upon date.)
NAME THAT AGAPANTHUS: Provide your best friend, best mate, ex-spouse or late mother-in-law a legacy in blue by bidding on the opportunity to name a hybrid Agapanthus. The selection honoring your moniker, arduously selected through an Agapanthus breeding program at Windcliff, will be forever propagated, promoted and marketed under your chosen name (as long as the name is does not contain expletives!). Top bidder will have the chance to select their favorite from a short-list of finalists in the breeding line, and will, of course, be provided a division of their namesake' to cultivate at home. It is indeed a gift that continues to give. (Does not include patent rights.)
RARE AFFAIR: A collection of five of the rarest plants Hinkley grows in his gardens of Heronswood and Windcliff with some species recently described and never before offered for sale in North America.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Dave Demers, plantsman, avid photographer and landscape designer, has traveled extensively to observe plants in the wild in Guatamala, Chile, Bhutan, Sikkim, NE India, Mongolia, Guatamala and China. It is through his observations of plants in the wild, and the associations of plant species in situ, that has provided him a artists eye in his design work. Dave will draw upon his time in the field, concentrating on his Asian experiences, to discuss some of his favorite plants and how they might be best used in PNW horticulture. A native of Quebec, he now lives in Vancouver where he is the principal of Cyan, a landscape design firm.
Dan Hinkley, along with his partner Robert L. Jones, founded Heronswood Nursery in 1987, in Kingston, WA. He is currently the director of Heronswood Garden, owned and operated by the Point Gamble SKlallam Tribe. Hinkley is a regular lecturer on a range of horticultural subjects and a frequent contributor to numerous publications. He resides, and gardens, at Windcliff in Indianola, WA with his husband and two Goldendoodles.
