Session IV: The Art of Allowance: "Winter Gongs" 4-part insight series with Eddie Easterly, 1/28 7-8:30p
Calming the Mind through Sacred Sound
The Art of Allowance is the fourth session of a 4-part insight series
Resistance stops the flow if energy and causes stress.
Resistance is born out of judgements and expectations and can limit our scope of opportunity.
In this session, we free ourselves by practicing the feeling of "allowing what is", thereby we fully observe a thing to learn and grow.
About this session: We will embark on an journey of relaxation and focused attention amidst blooming harmonic overtones. Listen to gongs and other sacred acoustic instruments to reduce attachment to outcomes, calm overactive thinking, and allow the body to balance and heal itself. Begin by setting an intention according to a personal need, then listen in a nonjudgemental way. Make yourself as comfortable as possible, close your eyes, imagine yourself merging with the sounds. You may lay down, sit, or stand in meditation (Zhan Zhuang Qigong). Remain still to maintain focus and go deeper. If your notice your mind wander, gently bring it back by merging with the sounds. Bring your yoga mat if you like. The listening period will last about an hour. After the session you may feel groggy for a time, yet energized and peaceful; If you plan to drive afterwards, stay with us a few minutes for simple grounding exercises and vocal toning, or wait until your body comes fully back to its senses before operating a vehicle or heavy machinery. You're welcome to share your experience with the group, and we can engage in short discussion if you have any questions.
Please note: Sound affects each person differently according to their life history and experiences. If your thoughts begin to race during the session, a normal experience for some beginners, simply notice the thoughts, remain unattached to them, and continue listening gently as each one passes by. This practice builds your habit for sustained concentration and improved self-awareness, engendering a clear and calm mind. If difficult feelings or painful memories emerge, notice them, remain nonjudgemental and unattached, and let them pass by while you continue listening gently. If a minor physical ache or pain exists, express gratitude for it, remain open to learning what it may have to reveal to you, and direct self-compassion and loving acceptance into the pain. Use common sense, this practice is not a replacement for a qualified medical doctor. Not recommended for pregnant women under 12-weeks, due to unstable nature of any pregnancy during this first trimester.
About your host: Eddie facilitates group meditations by combining sound with therapeutic intent in a safe setting. After working for seventeen years as a software engineer in busy corporate environments, in 2014 he dedicated himself to a daily meditation practice; Over time, he noticed a significant reduction of discursive thought and attachment to outcomes. Deepening his research, he found that ancient and modern civilizations used musical instruments for healing, spiritual, and cultural purposes. After teaching himself how to play various acoustic instruments, Eddie found it easier to enter and maintain specific states of consciousness, through which he achieved greater relaxation, sustained concentration, life realizations, pain reduction, and restful sleep for the day. Improvising with intuition, he plays for groups and individuals who actively train their mind by nurturing a gentle and nonjudgemental way of focused listening. Eddie transformed his life into a musical journey of lasting fulfillment and continued discovery through playing, sharing, and listening to sounds. He uses a mix of didgeridoos, shamanic drums, classical guitar, orchestral gongs, vocal toning, throat singing, chimes, Himalayan singing bowls, and other instruments. He led group sessions for ChantLanta in 2017, and The Weather Channel featured Eddie's electric guitar compositions in "Local on the 8s" segments.
