Classes & Schedule
Workshop Day 1: 11:00-12:00 Blues Boot camp This class will be the basic training for blues dance. It will address connection, posture, weight shifts and blues vernacular.
12:10-1:10 Ballrooming Is the modern interpretation of the slow dancing done at the Savoy Ballroom in the 40's and 50's traditionally it was danced with many turns lifts and dips. Today it has been developed into very dynamic dance adding a new flavor of movement to the floor craft.
1:10 - 1:50 Lunch Break
1:50-2:50 Tangoed Up in Blues This dance mixes the upright formality of tango with the down-home feeling of blues. In this class, you will learn some of the fundamentals of tango as well as transitions between the two dances. It will give your blues a smooth intimate look that only tango can provide.
3:00- 4:00 Connection This class will bring a whole new connection to you and your partner. It will go over the 3 classic types of connection and touch on a fourth. It will help you to bring together you and your partner and will bring a whole new understanding to the dance.
Saturday Night Dance: 8:30-12:30
Workshop Day 2: 11:00-12:00 Solo movement: This class will teach fun solo movement to enhance your dancing. Justine will pull from many influences to give you a routine that you will take with you fot the rest of your dance career.
12:10-1:10 Spins and Turns This class will go over several different spinning techniques and variations to put in your dancing.
1:50-2:50 Group Choreography This class will give you a partner routine that will be full of the wow factor. You will be able to do it as a group or as an individual couple.
3:00-4:00 Micro Blues This class will teach the art of communication through the most subtle movements.
Instructor Bio's
Lucky Skillen has been dancing for over 18 years. He began in 1996 and started his teaching career in 1998. Since then he has taught and performed many styles of dance in Asia, Europe, and North America. He was also a member of Frankie Manning's last performance troop in NYC. For the past 13 years, his main focus has been on Blues and fusion Dancing. He ran one of America's first weekly blues venues "Lucky's Lindy and Blues" and has been on the cutting edge of the contemporary blues movement ever since. He also taught at the first four fusion weekends and had a large influence on the dance. Lucky was one of the first to bring the blues dance movement to Europe and has helped to develop many of the scenes and teachers across the world. Currently, many of his students are competing and winning the world's top blues competitions. His philosophy on dance is to know where it came from but make it your own. In his search for knowledge about blues, he created a documentary on the history of American social dance called "Where We Danced," which has extensive research on the history of blues dance. He creates a fun and playful atmosphere in his classes and believes that play is learning and learning is fun!
