NOTES AGAINST THE BAN Musical Response From Seven Banned Countries
The Redwood Chamber Choir has partnered with two local groups of guest artists to bring performances that delve into Islam and Arab culture through music.
A concert will be held on November 11, 2017 and will feature two guest groups. San Mateos Aswat Ensembles Notes Against the Ban repertoire will feature artists from the seven countries originally banned in the Executive Order travel ban of January 27, 2017. Founded by Nabila Mango, this ensemble is part of a non-profit group called Zawaya (http://zawaya.org/site/mission-statement/).
Presenting music from Libya, Yemen, Iran, Syria, Somalia, Sudan and Iraq, the concert serves dual roles as ambassadorial outreach and as a healing salve. (https://ww2.kqed.org/arts/2017/03/13/music-from-seven-muslim-majority-countries-in-notes-against-the-ban/)
Members of The World Harmony Chorus will also be joining the performance. Founded by Daniel Steinberg, this group has three branches in Santa Cruz, Mountain View, and Oakland.
The guest musicians will be performing traditional music from their home countries with the two choirs joining them on several pieces.
