The course was developed by the Canadian organization LivingWorks in 1983, and is regularly updated to reflect developments in theory and practice. ASIST is the world's leading suicide intervention workshop, and is quickly becoming a required and internationally recognized certification in the helping professions. During the two-day interactive session, students learn concrete skills to intervene and help prevent the immediate risk of suicide. The focus of the workshop is helping people at risk keep safe for now. More than 1,000,000 people have attended workshops and obtained ASIST certification. Studies show that the ASIST approach helps reduce suicidal feelings for those at risk.
