East meets West: Art of the Islamic World
Founded in 1852, the V&As original aim was to collate works from across the world that would inspire British designers and manufacturers to levels of wonder. Today, you feel this more than ever in the treasure trove of Islamic art collected by the Jameel family. Centred around the exquisite 16th century Ardabil carpet, well find intricately carved woodwork, and vibrant, lustrous ceramics that typify the Islamic aesthetic. These date from 8th to the 20th centuries and span across the vast Islamic world from Spain to Turkey to Afghanistan. The endless geometric patterns, sinuous vegetal motifs, strong colours, and luminous lusterware are extraordinary to see and have been deeply admired for their technicality and aesthetic. As a conclusion to the tour, well move on to see how the West met the East in the Arts and Crafts of the Victorian galleries and beyond into the art of today.
