Starchitecture Through the Ages: The Square Mile
The City of London has risen like a phoenix from the ashes. Twice.
In 1666, the Great Fire of London destroyed much of the medieval city. Britains first starchitect, Sir Christopher Wren designed and rebuilt 51 new city churches, as well as his crowning glory - St Pauls Cathedral. 300 years on, and after the City was again destroyed in World War Two, modern-day starchitects like Richard Rogers and Norman Foster have rebuilt the City to be a place of glass and steel with an ever-increasing desire to reach new complexities of design.
This fascinating history has created an architecturally thrilling amalgamation of old and new. Well make our way from Wrens Baroque masterpiece St Pauls Cathedral, to Rogerss sci-fi skyscraper the Lloyds building. Well constantly compare and contrast the styles, structures and materials of the Square Mile. We will look at other crucial sites on the way including, the historically fascinating Bank of England, Royal Exchange, Mansion House and Leadenhall Market, and compare them with modern and contemporary power-houses such as Number One Poultry, the Rothschild Building, Cheesegrater, Gerkin and Walkie-Talkie all competing for attention on Londons skyline.
