Sketching the Embankment: Retracing the Impressionists Steps
Pencils at the ready, were going to learn how to sketch en plein air. Starting in the Tate Britain, well closely examine how 19th century artists created poetic, evocative images of the Thames, focusing on their brushwork and colour palette. JMW Turner was fascinated by the moody, industrial aesthetic of the Thames, and often captured its unique atmospheric conditions on canvas. The Impressionists, particularly Monet and later Whistler, shared a deep admiration for Turners stylistic and thematic innovations. Like their predecessor, their depictions of the Thames focused on the transient effects of light, colour and weather, and moved away from realistic depictions of nature.
Our chosen guide is not only a brilliant art historian, but also a stunning artist so well meander down to the riverbank to spend the second half of the tour trying our hand at sketching the Thames. Youll leave this tour with your own Impressionist masterpiece move aside Monet!
