2 Day Beginner's Drawing and Painting Workshop
Taking inspiration from the Crownpoint Gallery, this workshop will be exploring and using the space around us as the subject matter for a two day intensive introductory workshop to drawing and painting. Looking at how contemporary and traditional artists have dealt with formal concepts such as form, volume, tone and space, the workshop is perfect for those with little or no experience of drawing. Over the two days, students will practice the art of looking deeply, connect with new materials and will build a healthy and trusting attitude towards their own personal expression.

The workshop will be delivered by VAU artist member Ginny Elston and take place at Crownpoint Gallery on the 9th and 10th September. Each day will start at 9:30am every morning and finish at 4pm, with an hours break from 12:30  1:30pm. We will also take a 15 minute tea break in the morning and afternoon.

DAY 1: DRAWING
The first day will be spent drawing with dry materials, namely charcoal, rubbers, cloths and paper. We will be getting to grips with conveying a sense of the space, working and reworking large scale drawings for most of the day. A demonstration with the materials will be given, to give students ideas as to how to go about their drawings, as well as using the materials to build up areas of tone sensitively and effectively. We will also look and discuss the work of artists who have dealt with similar subject matter, through books and photocopies. At the end of the day, students will be given the opportunity to talk about their experiences of the day over a critique of the work.

DAY 2: MOVING INTO PAINT
On the second day, students will move into using paint in order to realise their impressions and experience of the space. Using just black and white acrylic, and our hands and brushes, students will build on the skills learnt from yesterday, incorporating line, tone, volume and exciting mark-making in order to tackle the space. Again, the day will begin with a demonstration of how to get the most out of their materials, and students will be given tips on using brushes effectively and how to be resourceful with paint. An opportunity to see everyone's work side by side will take place at the end of the day, as well as a concluding round up of the workshop.

Ginny Elston is an Edinburgh-based artist with an MFA in Fine Art and Humanities from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design. She currently works as a freelance art tutor who has worked for Leith School of art, Edinburgh Drawing School and the Edinburgh International Festival.
