Silicon Valley Dance Festival: "Aftershock"
ZiRu Dance announces the second annual Silicon Valley Dance Festival (SVDF), Aftershock, at the Menlo Atherton Performing Arts Center, September 29 through October 1, 2017. After sold out performances in its inaugural year, the annual festival returns with an exciting lineup of contemporary dance. For the 2017 festival, performances will include a range of acclaimed Bay Area choreographers, from established innovators to rising stars in contemporary ballet, modern, Hip Hop and more. SVDF is curated by ZiRu Dances Artistic Director Philein Wang and brings Silicon Valley premieres to Peninsula-area residents as a family-friendly weekend of dance.
Over the last 10 years, ZiRu Dance has built an extensive network of dancers and choreographers in the Bay Area, China, and beyond, to create a vibrant cross-sample of contemporary dance. The company is invested in giving contemporary dance a home in Silicon Valley, a place famous for its innovative science and technology sector, but lacking in easy access to rich performing arts experiences. ZiRu Dance has distinguished itself through its focus on multi-disciplinary work, collaboration across cultural boundaries, and actively addressing the questions of cultural identity.
Aftershock showcases work from ZiRu Dances Artistic Director Philein Wang (Silicon Valley) and guest choreographers Robert Moses (SF), Christian Burns (SF), and Stefani Berger (SF). There will be guest performances by Margaret Jenkins Dance Company (SF), David Harvey (formerly of LINES Ballet), The MoveMessenger(s) (SF), and Alejandro Perez (SF). SVDF brings together long-time Bay Area dance innovators with independent choreographers for a dynamic weekend of performances. ZiRu Dances resident choreographers (Alysia Chang, Vincent Chavez, Elizabeth Chitty, Amelia Eisen, Charles Roy, and Michele Wong) are also presenting work at SVDF. In addition to performances, festival programming includes community engagement activities such as school outreach programs, youth mentorships, and post-show Q&As with the artists.
After the festival last year, I was blown away by the positive response we received, said Philein Wang, ZiRu Dances Artistic Director. I knew I wanted to bring the art that I loved to my community, but I didnt anticipate how hungry people were for dance! At the heart of this whole endeavor, we want to make contemporary dance accessible for students and families in Silicon Valley and the Peninsula, so they can enjoy the cultural richness of dance."
