- - Inspiration - -
Vancouver has a long and passionate affair with striptease, from the days of classic burlesque through the exotic dance boom of the 80s and 90s. There are feathers, rhinestones, and glitter from showgirls lining the streets of this city, if we look closely enough! However, the history was not all glamour and glory. As much as there were glamorous showgirls hitting stages all over the town, there were also clear divisions between social classes, with many dancers facing discrimination, segregation, and racism in the industry. Through all of the extremes that the entertainers saw, up until the late 70s, live music was still often their accompaniment for their performances. However, with the rise of disco, and changes to entertainment laws, 1978 saw the end of bands backing up dancers. Poles became more and more of a feature in strip clubs and striptease shifted and evolved stylistically with time. Fascinated with the ever evolving history of showgirls, burlesque, and exotic dance, I wondered if there was room in this city today for an event that combined all of what she considers the best parts of that history: Fierce women on stage in celebation of the diverse art of exotic dance to the amazing music of the 60s and 70s. So far, the answer has been a strong yes, and I am deeply grateful for your support and love in this ongoing (and hoepfully ever improving) project!
