The Shadow Box
Three terminal patients and their loved ones grapple with the inevitable and find hope particularly hard to shake. During interviews with a hospital representative, we learn that Joe is eager to see his family after six months of solo treatment. He is concerned how his wife Maggie and their son Steve will bear up. Brian, on the other hand, is gulping down as many life experiences as he can swallow. His young lover, Mark, has been taking meticulous care of him and neither is expecting the arrival of his unpredictable former wife, Beverly, who soon bursts on the scene. Felicity is certain her long deceased daughter is coming for a visit and that helps to quiet her anger which makes life only marginally easier for her other daughter, the long suffering Agnes. The play is set in three cottages on the grounds of a large West Coast hospital in the mid 1970s.
