June 2017 Dinner Event: Around the World in 80 Days in a Tesla
Around the World in 80 Days In an Electric Vehicle
Presented by Alan Soule, President of the North Bay Chapter, Electric Auto Association
Why the heck would anyone want to do that? I signed up for the event to demonstrate that electric cars can be driven long distances, and to take in a little adventure. Ten international teams participated in the drive; 8 from Europe, one from China, and one from the U.S. Only one of the teams had driven around the world and that took 127 days.
* What did I need to prepare for accomplishing the drive in 80 days? * What didn't I think of in the preparations? * What would the road conditions be like? * Who would I meet along the way?
These were all things that kept me awake at night before we started. Fortunately, the drive was successful and there was some adventure. But the great stories are about the people that I met along the way.
About Alan Soule: From 1975 through 1977 Alan helped establish and was operations manager for Zamil-Soule Steel Buildings, a manufacturer of pre-engineered steel buildings in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. In 1981, with a partner, Alan bought Romac Pacific, a metal building contractor in Petaluma. Subsequently in 1997, he started Soule Building Systems, a metal building contractor in Sonoma County Alan's infatuation with electric cars began in 1991 when he leased a GM EV1, the first factory-made, all electric vehicle. In 2008 he bought a TESLA roadster. It was the 101st Roadster built; which he drove to Chicago and then back to LA on Route 66. This was the first electric vehicle to drive all of Route 66 without a support vehicle. In 2012 Alan bought his Tesla Model S, drove it across the U.S. and back; and in 2016 Alan drove his Model S Around the World.
