With book by Mark ODonnell and Thomas Meehan, music by Marc Shaiman, and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, Hairspray welcomes audience members to the 1960s and is piled high with bouffant hair, laughter, and romance.
Hairspray is set in 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable plus-size teen, Tracy Turnblad, has only one desire to dance on the popular "Corny Collins Show." When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob, Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network - all without denting her 'do, according to the licensees website. The winner of eight Tony awards, including Best Musical, Hairspray is a feel good, family friendly musical guaranteed to have everyone dancing the night away!
Ohio Valley Summer Theater is honored to present a show that challenges all of us to consider important social issues including racism, sexism and body image, bullying, and stereotypes. We are thrilled that this show has cast a large, diverse ensemble to tell the timeless story of the value of inclusion, compassion, and community.
Hairspray is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International.
