SYNOPSIS:
ACT I The curtain rises on the square of a small European town several hundred years ago. Dr. Coppelius, a toymaker, is putting the finishing touches on Coppelia. She seems so real that Dr. Coppelius is almost unaware that she is only a doll and leaves her with a book before running off. In his loneliness, the fanatical dollmaker has created Coppelia to be his companion and secretly dreams of discovering a way of bringing her to life.
Swanilda, a village girl, has wandered towards Dr. Coppelius house. She sees the lovely Coppelia reading a book and tries to attract her attention, but receives no reply. Ever curious, she runs into town to tell her friends what she has seen and arrives to find preparations are underway for the annual Harvest Festival. When Dr. Coppelius finally arrives he is swirled away by a boisterous band of gypsies. In the excitement he drops the key to his shop. Swanilda and her friends find the key, and filled with curiosity about the strange Doctor, decide to make their way past the path of dancing statues and up to his shop.
ACT II The curtain rises on the dimly-lit interior of Dr. Coppelius' shop and a room full of life-like figures. And discover the figures are toys! An astronomer and her shimmering stars, sweet teddy bears, Mischievous Jacks in the box, tiny toy soldiers, and ice skaters (moonlighting outside their snow globe!), surround the girls. Swanilda pokes her head into an alcove to discover Coppelia. The amazed young intruders then wind up all the dolls who dance as the friends watch, enchanted. Suddenly, a furious Dr. Coppelius enters and the culprits flee, except Swanilda. She runs into the alcove where Coppelia is kept.
The unsuspecting Dr. Coppelius brings what he thinks is his fabulous doll Coppelia from her alcove. However, it is Swanilda who has changed places with the doll. The Doctor makes some magical gestures over Swanilda as she rises to dance. The deluded Dr. Coppelius believes his puppet has come to life. But Swanilda, tired of the game, reveals herself to the toymaker. The toymaker embarrassed, picks up his doll from the ground. Swanilda sees his disappointed and invites him to be her guest at the festivities where the beautiful Waltz of the Hours will soon be performed. The new friends head back to the village square where Swanilda is crowned the Queen of the Harvest.
Coppélia is based on a story by E. T. A. Hoffmann -- the same tale that sparked Offenbach's brilliant "Doll Act" in his opera, The Tales of Hoffmann. Coppélia met with immediate success on its completion in 1870 and has been held a charming favorite by succeeding ballet-lovers both young and old. Please note that the story presented at our production has been modified from both the Hoffmann and Ballet originals to best showcase our dancers.
