A horny, pseudo-religious fraud invades a wealthy bourgeois household after conning the father of the family, and life turns into a knockabout sex farce. Is disaster inevitable? Will the beautiful daughter marry the scam artist or her one true love? Will the paterfamilias come to his senses? Will the dining room table collapse under its unaccustomed burdens? PLEASE, SOMEONE! (King Louis XIV, maybe?) DO SOMETHING!
The production is supervised by Marat Yusim, formerly a resident actor/director/teacher at the world-famous Moscow Art Theater. Here in New York City, he taught acting at the La Guardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts for more than twenty years.
This "Tartuffe" for the 21st Century is the first production of the New Renaissance Theater Company. The play's original, 17th Century production history was rocky. Although Molière had been a longtime favorite of King Louis XIV as both a playwright and a performer for years, the play was banned for years when it offended powerful religious figures.
